Beautiful Indian Ceylon 73g Solid Silver Box C1900 Antique

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful solid silver box. It is unmarked but tests as high grade silver. I would date it to c1900 most likely made in the Ceylon (Sri Lanka) region. It has been beautifully hand made being embossed and chased with scrolls and flowers. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs, the lid closes flush and tight. It measures approx. 2.5 inches (6.3cm) across by 1.25 inches tall and weighs 73 grams. A superbly designed beautiful example.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Anglo-Indian and Ceylonese silverwork combined traditional South Asian craftsmanship with Western functional forms. These pieces frequently feature dense foliate chasing, floral motifs, and intricate repousse relief work.

Craftsmen constructed these boxes using high-grade silver, shaping the form before applying repousse and chasing techniques. Detailed patterns were hand-hammered from the interior to create relief designs, followed by fine surface chasing on the exterior.

Authentic pieces typically showcase hand-chased floral or mythological decoration and a distinct weight consistent with solid silver. Colonial items may lack standard British hallmarks, though some feature local maker marks or purity stamps.

A silver trinket box serves as a functional accent on a bedside table, dressing table, or stacked atop books on a coffee table. Its detailed texture contrasts effectively against polished wood, marble, or dark lacquered surfaces.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and clean gently using a specialised silver polishing cloth to preserve the finish. Avoid abrasive polishes or submerging in harsh liquid dips, which strip natural oxidisation from detailed recessed areas.
