Cherub or putto motifs gained widespread popularity during the Italian Renaissance and French Rococo eras, symbolising innocence and celestial elegance. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, foundry techniques allowed cast spelter and bronze winged figures to be integrated into ornate ceiling lighting and chandeliers for domestic interiors.

These light fittings typically combine cast spelter or bronze figures with gilt finishes, brass fitments, and suspended lead crystal drops. Spelter, a zinc-based alloy, was commonly cast and finished with gilded patinas to mimic solid bronze at a lighter weight for ceiling installation.

Authentic period pieces display crisp casting details on the figure, subtle seam lines along the mold joints, and natural patination or wear to the gilded surface. Additionally, vintage and antique fixtures feature heavy, hand-cut glass or crystal prisms with wire connectors rather than lightweight modern acrylics.

Figurative gilt lights work as statement focal points when suspended in hallways, powder rooms, or above dining spaces. Pairing ornamental period lighting with simple contemporary wall finishes creates a striking contrast between classical sculpture and modern minimalist decor.

Dust the sculpted figure regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush to prevent buildup in the relief details. Avoid using liquid polishes or water on gilt spelter, as moisture can strip delicate gold leaf finishes, while glass crystals should be gently wiped with dilute isopropyl alcohol.
