Chainmail and mesh purses gained immense popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly within French and European accessory craft. Originally suspended from chatelaine belts or carried as evening accessories, these purses combined functionality with intricate metalwork.

These purses were constructed using interlinked wire rings or stamped metallic mesh made from sterling silver, silver-gilt, nickel silver, or plated base metals. Frames were typically cast or hand-stamped, often incorporating mechanical spring or ball-clasp closures.

Authentic period examples generally display official hallmarks or purity stamps stamped along the interior or exterior rim of the frame. Additionally, authentic pieces feature hand-linked ring construction and natural surface oxidisation consistent with age.

Small antique purses are often displayed on dressing tables, presented inside shallow glass shadow boxes, or arranged on decorative brass trays alongside period jewellery and vanity collectibles.

Clean the silver gently using a dry, soft cotton or microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints and surface dust. Avoid immersion in liquid chemical silver dips, as residue can trap moisture inside the delicate ring links and cause accelerated tarnish.
