Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian roll top desk uses dark brown mahogany timber with a plum pudding finish. The twin pedestal structure stands on a plinth base, housing a slatted tambour front above a central kneehole drawer and multiple smaller drawers fitted with horizontal wooden pull handles. The top section encloses a workspace, and the item separates into three modular components. Dimensions measure 127 cm high by 140 cm wide and 86 cm deep. Position this study table within a home library or private study to serve as a writing surface and storage unit. The timber surface provides compartments for document organisation, while the locking mechanism secures the slatted roll top when not in use.

FAQs

Popularised in the late 19th century, a roll top desk features a flexible slatted wooden shutter, known as a tambour, that slides down to conceal internal compartments and work surfaces.

Victorian roll top desks were typically constructed from solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring hand-fitted dovetail drawer joints and canvas-backed slatted wood tambours.

Authentic Victorian examples often feature original lock mechanisms, carved wooden drawer handles, dovetail construction on the pedestals, and original wear along the tambour tracks.

Position the desk in a dedicated home office or study, pairing the rich mahogany tones with modern leather task seating and contemporary warm illumination.

Clean wooden surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax periodically, ensuring the tambour track remains free of dust to allow smooth sliding action.
