Georgian Yew Wood Bureau on Stand

A fine solid yew wood bureau on stand from the early George III period. The bureau on stand was a particular piece of Georgian furniture that allowed this very useful item to travel with the owner as the desk section lifts from the base. This is a very interesting example of this type of furniture as it is made in solid Yew wood including the use of decorative burr figuring. The use of this wood in the solid makes this a fine piece of provincial country furniture. The stand has a shaped front and wonderfully elegant cabriole legs, both front and back, with slipper feet. There is also the addition on the side of the stand of a pair of candlestick slides for standing lights when working from the desk. The bureau section has a false drawer to the front and a fall (with working lock) that opens to be supported by loppers. The interior is beautifully laid out with waterfall drawers on the edge and pigeonholes to the centre. The writing surface has a slide that allows access to the storage space below. The whole stands wonderfully as only good period furniture can, perfect in proportion. The condition is very good (The handles are old replacements) and the colour and patina rich and deep. C.1750.
