Rare Victorian Papier-mâché & Mahogany Revolving Music Stool (Attributed to Jennens & Bettridge)

An exceptionally decorative antique Harpist music stool dating to the first half of the 19th Century. This wonderful and rare adjustable revolving music stool effortlessly rises and lowers to a comfortable height, making it as functional as it is visually striking.

The japanned papier-mâché seat, styled in a dramatic scalloped shell form, features a centrally carved floral motif. This elegant detail is beautifully replicated across the supporting solid mahogany carved base. The structure features a turned cannon center column united by a cross stretcher that anchors the elegant cabriole legs.

This piece represents craftsmanship of the highest caliber. The stool was most probably produced in the 1840s by Jennens & Bettridge of Birmingham (1815–1864), the preeminent and globally respected Victorian papier-mâché manufacturers. The heavy-duty steel rise-and-fall mechanism is explicitly stamped by the noted fitting maker J. Fitter, also of Birmingham.

The stool is in very good overall antique condition. True to its age, there is some light wear with slight crackling to the lacquer finish and a historic repair to the seat edge (clearly documented in the close-up photographs). Due to its delicate nature and historical value, this piece is now offered primarily as a premium decorative item.
