Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany & Satinwood Desk C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany & Satinwood Desk

Circa 1900

An elegant Edwardian mahogany desk of desirable small proportions, raised on slender square tapering legs terminating in spade feet.

The shaped top is inlaid with a central shell motif within satinwood and boxwood lines, echoing the shell inlay to the cylinder front above. The superstructure is fitted with a central compartment flanked by two cupboards, each door decorated with classical urn inlay and opening to reveal fitted pigeonholes with shaped fronts. The central lower section retains its drawer and inkwell recess, with two inkwells present.

The desk apron is fitted with a long central drawer flanked by two short drawers, all edged with line inlay and retaining attractive lion mask ring handles.

The colour is warm and even throughout, with a pleasing patina consistent with age. Keys are present for the locks, though there is some stiffness to the catches. The central cylinder door with looseness. The fitted interiors are attractive and very well made.

Measurements:

78.5 cm wide

48 cm deep

107 cm high

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian writing desks, produced between 1901 and 1910, frequently draw design cues from 18th-century Neoclassical and Sheraton styles, featuring light proportions, delicate marquetry, and tapered legs.

Primary timbers include rich mahogany, frequently accented with fine satinwood or rosewood crossbanding, boxwood stringing, and cast brass hardware such as lion-mask ring handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut timber inlays, fine dovetail drawer joints, original brass fitments, and subtle surface wear consistent with natural ageing rather than uniform machine production.

Pair the warm wood tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary table lighting, and clean-lined upholstered seating to create a balanced study or living room workspace.

Protect the desk from direct sunlight and heat sources, clean using a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the lustre.
