Outstanding Quality Antique Victorian Pollard Oak Mirror Back Sideboard by James Schoolbred

19th century
Description

Outstanding quality antique Victorian pollard oak mirror back sideboard by James Schoolbred and Co. having six bevelled edged mirrors, turned oak spindle galleries, shelf supported by turned columns, outstanding quality pollard oak top above a drop down full opening to reveal a storage compartment flanked by two pollard oak drawers stamped by the makers JA’s SHOOLBRED & Co with original brass handles open display compartment flanked by a pair of pollard oak panelled doors opening to reveal a storage compartment and a wine cooler standing on a plinth base

An exceptional piece of furniture by James Shoolbred & Co who were established in the 1820’s as a draper’s shop, at Tottenham Court Road, London. The company first began supplying textiles to the furniture trade. By the 1860’s, the company began designing, manufacturing and selling its own high quality antique furniture in their thriving and fashionable furniture shop. By the 1880’s they had expanded to such an extent that the business had to move to larger premises and became one of the first large department stores in London who would supply quality antique furniture and accessories for the Victorian home. Their furniture was displayed in a series of catalogues that the company produced every year with their new and impressive designs. James Shoolbred’s furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside the textiles, carpets and other accessories that the company sold, creating an example of interior design for customers to view. They were granted a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s and their Victorian furniture was of the best quality available of the late Victorian period. Unfortunately, as with most great Victorian designers and furniture makers, James Shoolbred & Co didn’t survive the financial crisis of the late 1920’s and ceased trading in 1931.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian mirror-back sideboard is a dining room storage cabinet comprising a lower cupboard base and an elevated superstructure fitted with reflective glass panels. Popularised during the 19th century, these pieces were designed for storing table linens and serving items while reflecting light across formal dining rooms.

Pollard oak furniture is characteristically crafted using timber from oak trees subjected to pollarding, which produces a dense, swirling burr grain pattern. Traditional construction involves solid frame joinery, hand-cut dovetail drawers, selected veneers, and decorative architectural details such as turned spindles or carved panelling.

Authentic pieces by established Victorian makers frequently feature stamped brass plates, embossed drawer linings, or impressed maker marks on drawer edges. Identification relies on examining hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original metal hardware, and proportions consistent with late 19th-century manufacturing.

Position a Victorian sideboard as a focal point against a neutral or deep dark wall within a dining room or wide hallway. Balance its substantial proportions by displaying contemporary ceramics, glass vessels, or simple modern table lamps on the surface.

Maintain pollard oak by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth along the grain direction. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the original finish.
