Antique Vertex Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Vertex pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality 17-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has screw-set jewels with gold chatons, swan neck micro regulator and Breguet hairspring for enhanced precision.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is the gold plated Star model from the Dennison Watch Case Company. Dennisons was a Birmingham based manufacturer and supplier of cases to various watch makers. The front and sides of the case are in good condition, the screw-on case back has a gentle unevenness.

The glass lens has minor marking but is very acceptable.

The signed dial is in lovely condition with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch comes with a double albert, with each chain measuring 18cm long including the T-bar and the clasp.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in the early twentieth century, Vertex was a prominent watchmaker producing Swiss-made movements for the British market, recognised for reliable timekeeping and classic horological design.

Vintage pocket watches typically feature vitreous enamel dials, blued steel hands, and cases made from solid gold, rolled gold, or gold plating, often accompanied by brass or gold-plated Albert chains.

Authenticity is verified by checking maker marks on the dial or movement, inspect hallmarks inside the case back for metal purity, and examining the mechanical construction of the movement.

A pocket watch can be worn traditionally fastened to a waistcoat with an Albert chain, placed in a breast pocket, or displayed on a stand inside a cabinet or desk display.

Store the timepiece in a dry environment free from moisture, wind the crown gently without forcing the mechanism, and arrange periodic servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years.
