1930s Tavannes Crest Pocket Watch and Chain

1920 - 1940
Description

1930s Tavannes Crest pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality 17-jewel (2 adjustments) stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name Crest. This brand name was first registered by Schwob Freres (the founding family of Tavannes) in 1913, and it was then registered again in 1939 by Tavannes. The name Crest was used for Tavannes watches sold by the People’s Jewellers in Canada.

The watch measures 45mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold filled and handsomely decorated on the sides and the back. There is a cartouche to the back with the original owner’s initials, AC. The inside of the case back is signed with the Crest name.

The glass lens is in super condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track. It is all in super condition.

The watch comes with its original chain, 34cm long, and also the original accompanying engraved penknife. This is the only example we have ever seen with its original penknife.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pocket watches from the 1930s Art Deco period feature crisp geometric symmetry, streamlined typography, textured guilloche dials, and slim casing compared to earlier Victorian models.

Timepieces of this period were frequently housed in gold-filled or rolled gold cases, featuring brass or steel mechanical movements, glass crystals, and matching patterned link chains.

Authenticity is verified by checking the movement markings, hallmark stamps inside the case back, correct period dial typography, and hand-wound mechanical movements matching the era.

A pocket watch and chain can be displayed on a desktop watch stand, housed within a glass cloche dome, or placed inside a leather valet tray alongside modern accessories.

Keep the timepiece dry and away from magnetic fields, wind the movement gently without forcing the crown, and store it in a lined case to prevent surface scratching on the metal.
