Art Deco Gold Plated Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Art Deco gold plated pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is stamped Spiral Breguet which relates to the overcoil design of the hairspring for enhanced accuracy.

The watch measures 47.5mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and was made by Manufacture Les Breuleux. The case is in beautiful condition and has a charming Art Deco pattern to the hinged case back.

The acrylic lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial has a very handsome textured finish, Breguet style hands and numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial.

The watch comes with its original gold filled chain which is stamped, ‘Doublé Or Laminé’. The chain measures 36cm long including the clasps.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Art Deco pocket watches, produced predominantly during the 1920s and 1930s, are defined by geometric dial patterns, stylised numeric typography, and streamlined cases. Features such as triangular bows, guilloche engraved dials, and slim profiles reflect the modern, industrial aesthetic of the era.

These timepieces commonly utilised brass or steel bases plated with gold, silver, or chrome, alongside solid gold and platinum for higher-end models. Dials were often finished with enamel, silvering, or engine-turned guilloche detailing, protected by acrylic or glass crystals.

Authentic period pieces feature distinctive typographic fonts for the numerals, geometric engine-turned patterns on the dial, and specific case geometry such as angular bows. Checking internal movement stamps, serial numbers, and hallmarks or makers marks inside the case back confirms production era and origin.

An open-face pocket watch with a chain can be worn in the traditional manner paired with a waistcoat, modern tailored suit jacket, or trouser pocket. Alternatively, collectors display these horological objects on dedicated desktop stands or within glass cloches as decorative accents.

Store the timepiece in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from magnetic fields to protect the movement. Wipe the gold-plated casing gently with a soft microfibre cloth to remove oils, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
