Antique 1930s Invar Pocket Watch

1920 - 1940
Description

Antique 1930s Invar pocket watch.

The watch has a 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed Invar.

The Invar Watch Company was founded in 1901 by Achille Hirsch in Le Chaux de Fonds, but the name was not registered until 1925. Mr. Hirsch was a rather prolific watch distributor around the turn of the century, who registered hundreds of trademarks, so to some degree this watch represents an attempt to profit from the new material, Invar.

Invar is an alloy which, when used in watches, makes them non-magnetic and good steady time keepers through a wide range of temperatures. Invar was invented in 1896 by Swiss scientist Charles Édouard Guillaume. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1920 for this discovery, which enabled improvements in scientific instruments.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has some scratching where it has been opened in the past.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 10ct gold filled and was made by the English watch case maker Dennisons of Birmingham, a prolific manufacturer and supplier to various watch makers. It was often more economical to import movements and case them in the UK, thus avoiding import tax on precious metals.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is in lovely condition and has blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This Art Deco open-face pocket watch dates from the 1930s. The 10ct gold-filled case houses a 15-jewel stem-winding movement signed Invar, protected by an inner hinged cover with scratching from past opening. The watch measures 50mm in diameter, excluding the winding stem and the loop, and features a glass lens, a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, a sub-seconds dial, outer minute markers, and blued steel hands. An onion crown and a top suspension loop complete the hardware. Designed for a gentleman's library, this timepiece suits use as a functional accessory or a desk piece. The white enamel dial contrasts with the gold case and the dark numerals, while the ridged onion crown provides tactile grip for winding. The case bears manufacture by the English watch case maker Dennisons of Birmingham, pairing an imported Swiss movement with a British-made housing to manage import taxes. The movement remains in working order to keep steady time through temperature variations.

Open-face pocket watches became prominent for everyday utility, allowing immediate time-reading without opening a protective lid. By the 1930s, horologists focused on precision alloy movements, such as those utilising Invar steel, to maintain accuracy across varying temperatures.

Timepieces from this era generally feature gold-filled, rolled gold, or solid gold cases, paired with vitreous enamel dials, blued steel hands, and high-friction mechanical jewel movements.

Authentic pieces display crisp maker marks or hallmarks inside the case back, along with period-correct movement engravings and a clean, double-sunk or single-sunk vitreous enamel dial with fine minute track detailing.

A classic pocket watch can be worn attached to a fob chain in a waistcoat pocket, styled inside a suit jacket breast pocket, or displayed on a specialized glass dome stand as a desk timepiece.

Store the timepiece in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from magnetic fields. Wind the movement gently until natural resistance is met, and arrange for professional lubrication by a horologist every three to five years.
