Description

Tapestry and kilim weaving in the Balkans is rich and underappreciated art form which has been practiced successfully for centuries. Incorporating local folk ornamentation with oriental and western European designs, the results are often beautiful and highly decorative. This lovely piece was woven in Oltenia, South-West Romania bordering the Carpathian Mountains, and Bulgaria to the south. Tapestry and kilim weaving in Oltenia reached great heights using complex techniques, including curved or 'eccentric' wefts' exist. Our piece is a fine example. It is beautifully made with fine wool, lovely subtle dyes and masterful technique. Randomly drawn floral sprigs appear to be floating above a black background. The composition is delicate and spacious, and very pleasing on the eye. The small format makes it ideal for use on the wall or on the floor. Professionally cleaned and in excellent condition, this rare beauty would make a charming addition to your decorative scheme.
