Ludwigsburg Porcelain Royal Serving Tray with Crowned Monogram, C.1765–1785

Description

A rare large hard-paste porcelain serving tray from the Ducal Porcelain Manufactory at Ludwigsburg, Württemberg, commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen himself.

The tray has a highly unusual rectangular form with stepped sides, rounded projecting corners and a raised border. Its broad rim is painted with a continuous purple-brown Empire-style ornament of scrolling foliage and palmettes, finished with rich gilding.

At the centre is a formal personal monogram: a white Latin letter “I” in an iron-red oval cartouche beneath an open five-pointed ducal coronet. The cartouche is framed by small purple roses, laurel sprays and leafy branches. We are inclined to believe that this exceptional commissioned piece was intended as a prestigious representative gift from Duke Carl Eugen to a foreign crowned head or sovereign.

The reverse carries the authentic hand-painted underglaze cobalt-blue Ludwigsburg mark of interlaced C’s beneath the ducal crown, together with a cobalt-blue numeral “2”, probably indicating the tray’s mould size. The unglazed footrim retains its natural antique patina and firing traces.

Condition:

Excellent antique condition. A small chip to the rim on one side. Minimal, barely visible gilt wear to one small area of the rim.
