Pair of Kashmiri Hand‑painted Table Lamps - Early 20th C

1920 - 1940
Description

A charming pair of Kashmiri hand‑painted table lamps, each crafted in the traditional Srinagar papier‑mâché and lacquer technique. The bodies feature an elegant open spiral column, a distinctive form that adds sculptural movement and lightness to the design. Both lamps are decorated throughout with intricate cobalt‑blue and gold floral motifs on a warm cream ground, executed in the fine, detailed brushwork characteristic of Kashmiri artisans.

The circular bases repeat the same floral patterning, creating a cohesive decorative scheme. Each lamp is topped with a brass bulb holder, complementing the warm tones of the painted decoration. Standing at 30 cm high, they are well‑proportioned for side tables, consoles, or bedside use, offering both decorative appeal and practical function.

These lamps exemplify early to mid‑20th‑century Kashmiri export craftsmanship: colourful, detailed, and unmistakably handmade, with the spiral form giving them a more unusual and desirable presence than standard straight‑column examples

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kashmiri painted lighting typically features turned wood or papier-mache bases decorated with dense, hand-painted floral and foliate motifs, often inspired by traditional Persian designs and finished with a protective coat of lacquer.

These lamps were constructed using turned softwood or dense papier-mache paste, painted with mineral- or vegetable-based pigments, coated in natural resin varnish, and fitted with brass electrical mountings.

Authentic pieces display fine, hand-applied brushwork rather than stencilling, natural surface wear or light craquelure to the lacquer, and early brass bayonet bulb holders appropriate to the period.

A pair of decorative Kashmiri lamps works well placed symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or flanking a bed to introduce color, pattern, and artisanal texture into contemporary schemes.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping them away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and harsh chemical polish which can dissolve the original lacquer finish.
