This Victorian Imari dessert service originates from 1882 and comprises six matching plates alongside a low comport in fine bone china. The pieces display an intricate palette of cobalt blue, terracotta, and rich gold leaf, finished with bright gilded rims. Each item is decorated with a geometric starburst medallion surrounded by complex floral scrollwork and traditional Imari patterns painted in enamel. The set exhibits excellent condition overall, showing only very minor wear to the gilding and surface pattern, with no chips, cracks, or crazing visible across the bone china bodies. The individual plates measure roughly 22 cm in diameter, making them suitable for everyday use or display. Items of this type fit naturally into traditional English Country House settings, bringing decorative colour and heritage craftsmanship to interior spaces. The service works well arranged on a sideboard top or within a glazed display cabinet to showcase the detailed cobalt blue and terracotta motifs. Alternatively, the collection functions effectively for serving desserts during formal dinners or afternoon teas when collectors wish to use antique tableware for special dining occasions.

FAQs

Produced during the nineteenth century, a Victorian porcelain dessert service typically comprises matching plates and elevated serving dishes designed for formal dining courses following the main meal.

English manufacturers primarily utilised fine bone china or porcelain, finished with hand-painted enamel glazes and gilding containing burnished gold leaf.

Authentic pieces feature stamped or printed factory trade marks on the underside, often accompanied by specific date ciphers, year symbols, and hand-written pattern numbers.

These decorative ceramic pieces can be displayed in glass cabinets, styled atop sideboards, or mounted on walls in arranged groupings to introduce geometric pattern and rich color.

Clean hand-decorated porcelain using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or modern dishwashers that degrade delicate gilded rims and enamel detailing.
