Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style writing desks typically feature cabriole legs ending in ball-and-claw feet, elaborate relief carvings, and rich dark timbers such as mahogany. Originating in 18th-century England, the design balances classical proportions with functional storage features including inset leather surfaces and multiple drawers.

Traditionally, high-grade timbers such as mahogany were selected for the frame and drawer fronts due to their durability and dense grain. Writing surfaces were frequently fitted with gold-tooled or blind-tooled leather inserts, paired with hand-cast brass handles and locks.

Look for signs of traditional cabinetry, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, secondary pine or oak lining inside drawers, and period-appropriate brass hardware. Authentic carving on the cabriole knees and ball-and-claw feet should display hand-carved detail rather than modern machine stamping.

Integrate a classic mahogany desk by pairing it with modern lighting, such as a sleek brass task lamp, and contemporary artwork nearby to balance the traditional visual weight. Placing the desk against a neutral backdrop highlights the rich timber tones without overwhelming the space.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually to nourish the wood finish. Keep the leather insert clean by wiping with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or direct heat sources that can dry out the leather.
