Antique Mahogany Chippendale Style Pedestal Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

A very impressive and extremely well made antique mahogany Chippendale style pedestal desk. This is in the famous Chippendale style, it was made in England and dates from the 1900-20’s.

It is of superb quality and is a great size, with a wide knee hole. The inset leather top is gold tooled and has a beautiful patina, the top, middle and lower edges are beautifully carved with intricate beading. The front edges are canted and grooved, high quality brass handles and this sits on claw and ball legs. The back is nicely finished and the top lifts right off, so this can break down into three pieces for ease of transport. The mahogany grain patterns and colour tones are stunning throughout.

We have had this recently polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age and all part of the character.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale style pedestal desk typically features twin columns of drawers supporting a wide writing surface, incorporating eighteenth-century design elements such as carved cabriole legs, ball and claw feet, and mahogany construction.

These desks are constructed primarily from mahogany timber and veneers, frequently featuring gilt-tooled leather writing inserts and cast brass handles.

Look for hand-carved details such as ball and claw feet or gadrooned borders, dovetailed drawer joints, solid wood drawer linings, and natural age-related patina across the wood and metalwork.

Position the desk centrally in a dedicated home office or library, pairing it with a neutral rug, a modern task light, and contemporary artwork to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and current design.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain, while cleaning the leather insert with a dedicated leather conditioner to prevent drying.
