Description:

This is a fine quality antique English Art Deco walnut wardrobe, featuring a bow-front design, a fitted interior and two drawers below; it dates from around 1930 and remains in excellent original condition. Overall, the Art Deco wardrobe shows an elegant moulded “bow-shaped” design, and the two doors boast stunning mirror-matched figured walnut timbers set within a cross-banded frame. Notably, the curved doors retain their original vertical wooden handles. Meanwhile, the left-hand door still has its original sliding bolts, top and bottom, which secure the door when closed, and the right-hand door likewise retains its original working lock and key.

Inside, the Art Deco armoire offers a hanging space with an original rail to the left-hand side, alongside two vertically arranged open compartments and two glass-fronted drawers to the right. Below these, a pair of drawers sit at the bottom of the fitted walnut armoire and retain their original vertical wooden handles. In addition, the antique walnut armoire rests on its original moulded, recessed plinth, while the back features solid original backboards. Importantly, this walnut wardrobe does not dismantle; it is a single-piece wardrobe.

Condition Report:

This is a fine quality antique English Art Deco two-door wardrobe in figured walnut timbers, with a bow-front design, a fitted interior and two drawers below; it dates from circa 1930 and remains in excellent original condition. There are nominal old use marks to the leading edges, but nothing significant given the age of the item. Furthermore, our workshop has cleaned and hand French-polished the Art Deco bow-front wardrobe to a professional standard. The wardrobe still retains its original interior, including the hanging rail and internal compartments, while the doors keep their original door latches, handles and working lock (with key). Additionally, the Art Deco walnut wardrobe retains its original backboards and stands on its original recessed plinth. As previously noted, this wardrobe does not dismantle; instead, it comes as a single piece, making it a solidly built, ready-to-use item that has stood the test of time.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco wardrobes from the 1930s feature clean geometric lines, soft curved corners or bow fronts, and prominent surface veneers. British design of this era shifted away from heavy Victorian ornamentation toward streamlined silhouettes, utilizing figured woods such as walnut and mahogany to create decorative visual interest through natural grain patterns.

These wardrobes were typically constructed with solid wood framing, such as pine or oak, surfaced with high-quality walnut, burr walnut, or mahogany veneers. Decorative elements often incorporated steam-bent wood handles, bakelite components, or chrome-plated hardware alongside book-matched wood panelling.

Authentic pieces display period-specific features including book-matched walnut grain, integrated timber or bakelite door handles, solid brass or nickel-plated hinges, and internal fittings such as labelled metal rails, shoe racks, or fitted drawers. Construction details typically show hand-finished dovetail joints and age-appropriate wear to the interior timber.

Place the wardrobe against a neutral or rich jewel-toned accent wall to highlight the warm tones of the walnut grain. Combining warmth-toned timber furniture with minimalist modern lighting and natural linen textiles balances the vintage structure with contemporary interior schemes.

Dust the exterior regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the direction of the wood grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber veneer, avoiding silicone-based sprays, direct sunlight, and placement near central heating radiators to prevent drying or cracking.
