The population splits in two. Roughly half is interwar burr-walnut and figured-walnut bedroom furniture, often bow-fronted, dome-topped or serpentine and fitted out internally. That fitting-out was a later refinement on the plain hanging cupboard, aimed at holding a whole wardrobe in one case.
Dating is mostly by bracket rather than year. Around two thirds of listings carry a clean year, but a large block reads simply Victorian, Edwardian or 19th century, and title dates like c1920, c1890 and c1900 are decade markers. The field spans 1780 to 1930, with pre-1800 pieces a handful only.
Where The Range Splits
Veneer does most of the work. Burr and figured walnut, and marquetry inlay, dominate the wording at the upper reaches; plain walnut and satin walnut sit at the bottom, satin walnut being the pale, silky timber used for cheaper late-Victorian and Edwardian bedroom sets. The very top is held by large Victorian burr breakfronts and marquetry-inlaid pieces.
Scale and shaping come next. Triples and breakfronts cluster high, including the few four-door examples; singles and small pieces sit low. Flat fronts give way to bow, serpentine, dome-topped and carved treatments as you move up, with bombe and cloud-fronted one-offs at the far end.
Fitting-out separates otherwise similar carcases. Compactum and gentleman's fitted interiors carry well above a plain hanging cupboard of the same date. Inlay, banding and decorated surfaces add again, and a named cabinetmaker or a country-house provenance appears mostly at the top, though only one name in the whole archive clears three dealers.
