Introduction

Antique Compactums

The word is a trade term for a fitted wardrobe, and in this archive it sits so close to "wardrobe" that nearly every title uses both. What it describes is a single case piece holding a full wardrobe of clothes: hanging space on one side, drawers or sliding trays on the other. It's a Victorian and Edwardian development of the plain wardrobe, and the name stayed in use through the interwar years.

The type you'll meet most is English, 19th or early 20th century, and mahogany. Mahogany names 135 titles, walnut 81. Triple-door form runs through a quarter of the record, with "triple wardrobe" alone in 71 titles, commonly breakfront or with a mirrored centre door. Victorian is the largest period label at 97 listings, Edwardian second at 52.

Around that core sit four smaller strands. Walnut and burr walnut, including Art Deco pieces from the 1920s and 1930s, make up roughly a quarter. Edwardian inlaid mahogany and satinwood account for under a fifth. Oak and ash, some of it Arts and Crafts, take about a tenth, and pine or painted country examples a small minority.

The dated field runs 1830 to 1930, a clean century, though 24 listings are filed only as "19th Century" and the labels sometimes lag the titles. Scale swings widely: single- and small-door cupboards at one end, large breakfront four-door pieces at the other, with one miniature oak compactum recorded and corner-fitting examples appearing twice.

Where The Range Splits

Timber does most of the work. Burr walnut, satinwood, flame and figured mahogany, birds eye maple and satin birch sit high; stripped pine, pitch pine and scumbled softwood sit low. Burr walnut alone carries 33 titles and is the signature of the Deco end. The woods that surface once in a while are the ones worth knowing: pollard oak, ripple maple, limed oak, burr elm, rosewood, Oregon pine.

Decoration lifts a piece from the middle of the range. Inlay appears in 37 titles, carving in eight, and marquetry, chinoiserie decoration and hand-painted satinwood turn up among the samples. Front shaping counts for the same reason: breakfront, inverted breakfront, bow-front and serpentine all read as more ambitious than a flat front.

Then size and doors. Four-door and large breakfront pieces stand above single and small ones, and "of small proportions" marks the bottom along with the miniature and the plain Victorian oak. A named or labelled retailer pushes upward, and dealers put "labelled" in the title when there is one. The top of the record is held by large Victorian walnut and marquetry compactums with a country-house provenance.

The Antique Compactums Glossary

Compactum
A wardrobe with hanging space combined with fitted drawers, trays or shelves in one carcass. Used almost interchangeably with wardrobe in listing titles.
Triple wardrobe
Three-door form, and the commonest configuration in the archive; 71 titles use the exact phrase.
Breakfront
The centre section projects forward of the flanking sections. It attaches to 34 titles. Inverted breakfront, where the centre is set back instead, shows up in a couple.
Combination wardrobe
A dealer's alternative name for the same fitted form, in nine titles and weighted towards current stock.
Linen press
The sliding-tray storage section. "Press" appears in eight titles, sometimes standing in as the name for the whole piece.
Dismantles
Noted in a title to say the carcass comes apart for moving, which matters on pieces of this scale.
Questions people ask

Antique Compactums: Frequently Asked Questions

What does compactum mean on a wardrobe listing?

It means the wardrobe combines hanging space with fitted storage, drawers, trays or shelves, in one carcass rather than being an empty hanging cupboard.

The word became a general trade term for fitted wardrobes of this kind, and dealers here use it almost interchangeably with "wardrobe". Nine titles use "combination wardrobe" for the same thing.

Which wood is most common?

Mahogany, which names 135 titles. Walnut follows at 81, so between them they take the larger part of the titles that name a timber.

Oak accounts for around 33 titles, ash 12 and pine 16. Beyond that the record throws up satin birch, pollard oak, birds eye maple, limed oak, burr elm, rosewood and Oregon pine, each turning up only occasionally.

How old are most compactums?

The dated field spans 1830 to 1930. Victorian is the largest single label at 97 listings, Edwardian second at 52, which between them cover the bulk of the dated record.

After that come the 1920s at 30 and the 1930s at 24, with 24 more listings filed only as "19th Century". A handful of titles claim Georgian, Regency or William IV, but they stand alone against the Victorian-to-Deco bulk.

Are triple-door compactums the standard form?

They are the commonest. Triple appears in 86 titles and the exact phrase "triple wardrobe" in 71, a quarter of the category.

Breakfront attaches to 34 titles, often to the triple form, so a three-door piece with a projecting centre is the shape you'll meet again and again. Two-door and four-door versions exist alongside it.

What sizes do they come in?

Wide. "Large" appears in 25 titles and "small" in eight, running from single-door cupboards up to breakfront four-door pieces.

One miniature oak compactum is recorded, and it sits at the very bottom of the range. Corner-fitting examples appear twice.

Do compactums carry maker's names?

Rarely enough that only one name clears three dealers across the whole archive. Most are unattributed English case furniture.

Where a name does appear it comes as a label or a stamp from a retailer, and dealers flag it in the title. Isolated listings name Scottish, Manchester, Newcastle or London retailers.
