Introduction

Antique Arts and Crafts Wardrobes

The wardrobe took over from the chest and the press in British bedrooms across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, picking up mirrored doors and fitted interiors as hanging clothes became the norm. The Arts and Crafts version belongs to the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when plain panelled construction and visible joinery were preferred to applied ornament.

Oak dominates, at nearly half the titles on Sellingantiques, and the piece you are most likely to meet is a two- or three-door oak case of ordinary bedroom scale, dated somewhere around 1900. The dealers' own period fields put 42 listings in the 1900s, with Victorian, the 1910s and Edwardian behind it; the dated range as a whole runs 1880 to 1930. Title dates and period fields don't always line up, so a title reading c1860 can sit under a Victorian period label.

Beyond the oak, four other woods are in steady use. Ash and walnut each account for around a tenth of titles, including golden ash and burr walnut, and mahogany a similar share, some with satinwood panels or inlay and some titled linen press or clothes press. Pine forms a small, separate pocket, several of them knockdown carcasses offered to wax or paint, and two of those listed as pairs.

Form varies more than the heading suggests. Triple-door wardrobes turn up throughout, at 15 titles, and the word compactum appears in nine, alongside combination, compendium and Gentleman's wardrobes. Nine titles describe a hall robe or hall wardrobe, a narrower, shallower cupboard for coats, and at the other end are triples and one case stated at 8ft wide by 8ft high. Several pieces are sold as parts of bedroom suites or as carcasses that dismantle.

What Sets Them Apart

Authorship does most of the work. The highest-priced titles in the archive name a firm or attribute one, while the lower half is largely unattributed, and wording like "in the manner of" or "style of" sits near the bottom rather than the top.

Scale follows close behind. Single-door cases described as compact size or small proportioned cluster low, and triple wardrobes and the ones simply called large cluster high. A fitted interior lifts a piece above a plain hanging cupboard in the same wood, which is why compactum, combination and compendium titles sit where they do.

Timber and figure are the third axis. Plain oak holds the middle of the range, and the upper end is where burr walnut, pollard oak, satinwood panels and inlaid mahogany or walnut appear. Surface matters too: the pine wardrobes offered to wax or paint are unfinished projects, a different proposition from the polished oak and walnut cases.

The Antique Arts and Crafts Wardrobes Glossary

Compactum
A wardrobe fitted inside with drawers, sliding trays and a hanging section rather than being one open cupboard. Nine titles use the word.
Triple wardrobe
The three-door form, usually a central mirrored door with a cupboard either side. Fifteen titles on Sellingantiques describe one.
Hall robe
A shallower, narrower cupboard meant for coats and hats by the front door. Nine titles use hall rather than bedroom.
Knockdown
Built to come apart for moving, with doors, sides and cornice separating. It appears on several pine listings, sometimes worded as "dismantles".
Clothes press
A case with shelves or trays behind the doors above a drawer base. Three titles use press, including linen press.
Golden oak
A title term for the warm, pale finish common on turn-of-century oak, along with light oak.
Questions people ask

Antique Arts and Crafts Wardrobes: Frequently Asked Questions

Which wood is most common?

Oak, by a clear margin: it appears in nearly half the titles, often described as golden oak or light oak.

Ash, walnut, mahogany and pine each hold a smaller but regular share, so five woods are in circulation rather than one.

What does compactum mean on a wardrobe?

It means the inside is fitted out with drawers and sliding trays as well as hanging space, instead of being a single open cupboard.

Nine titles use the word. Combination, compendium and Gentleman's wardrobe describe much the same idea, a case that does the work of a wardrobe and a chest together.

How old are these wardrobes?

The dated listings run from 1880 to 1930, with 75 of the 130 carrying a clean year.

The 1900s are the largest single group at 42 listings, then Victorian, the 1910s and Edwardian. Only three fall in the 1930s.

Are hall wardrobes different from bedroom ones?

Yes. A hall robe is narrower and shallower, made for coats and hats near the door rather than for a full wardrobe of clothes.

Nine titles describe one, a form that doesn't turn up in most wardrobe categories.

Why are some pine ones sold unfinished?

A small pocket of pine examples is offered as knockdown carcasses "to wax or paint", meaning the surface is left for the buyer to finish.

Two of those listings are pairs rather than single wardrobes. They sit apart from the polished oak and walnut cases in the same category.

How often do these come up for sale?

Around nine a year come to market on Sellingantiques, and 43 different dealers have listed one.

That makes for a wide but thin supply: plenty of dealers handle them, none in quantity.
