19th Century Compactum Wardrobe with Original Scumble Faux Oak Paintwork

19th century
Description

19th Century Wardrobe Compactum With Original Scumble Faux Oak Paintwork

The wardrobe dismantles easily & is constructed in six parts: two upright boxes, each containing two large drawers, a cornice & a plinth. The two boxes locate onto the plinth & are held together by the cornice & additional screws. This makes it possible to take the wardrobe up a normal sized staircase without difficulty. This is now a rare piece of furniture, prized by interior designers as not many have survived without being stripped. The wardrobe is made using large panels of yellow pine. Scumbling is a decorative paint technique & typically refers to the creation of a faux wood grain finish to imitate timbers such as mahogany or oak. The interior consists of two full length hanging sections fitted with brass hanging rails. Each section has two large drawers with gilded swan neck handles. The drawers run beautifully smooth. The wardrobe comes with working locks & keys & has been cleaned throughout & is presented in fine, restored showroom condition, ready for clothes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A compactum wardrobe is a specialised 19th-century bedroom storage piece designed to combine hanging space, drawers, and shelving within a single unified cabinet. Originating in the Victorian era, these pieces offered comprehensive clothing organisation in compact bedrooms.

Scumble paintwork, or faux graining, involved applying a translucent glaze over a lighter base coat, which was then manipulated using combs, brushes, and sponges to mimic real oak grain. The piece was typically constructed from pine or softwoods prior to receiving this decorative paint technique.

Authentic 19th-century scumble finishes exhibit natural surface wear, subtle glaze craquelure, and hand-worked grain patterns that differ slightly across panels. Traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original iron or brass keyhole escutcheons, and pine backboards also confirm era authenticity.

A faux oak wardrobe serves as a warm anchor piece in a neutral bedroom or hallway scheme. Pair it with soft linen textiles, contemporary muted wall tones, and minimal brass accents to highlight its historical texture without overwhelming the space.

To preserve original scumble paintwork, dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid water, harsh solvents, or abrasive polishes, applying only a high-grade beeswax sparingly if recommended by a conservator.
