Late 17th-century English Oak Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A late 17th-century English oak chest of drawers of well-balanced proportions .

This handsome chest retains a soft, mellow original colour and rich surface patina that only develops over centuries of careful use. All timbers are original, including the top and the back boards, which remain in their honest, unrestored state. The façade is arranged with two short drawers over three long drawers, each front boldly moulded with geometric raised panels typical of the period.

The original brass handles are particularly attractive — decorative drop handles with shaped backplates — and are matched by the corresponding keyhole escutcheons. The drawers run well and the chest stands on its original bracket feet with a continuous base moulding.

Dimensions

Height 87 cm

Width 86 cm

Depth 48 cm

A lovely, unmolested example that has not been “improved” or over-restored — simply an honest survivor with excellent colour, original fittings and strong architectural presence.

Declaration

School House Antiques has dated these Antique Oak Chest Drawers to the 17th Century.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 17th-century English oak furniture, originating from the Carolean and Jacobean periods, is recognised for sturdy joinery, geometric drawer front mouldings, and deep, dark wood patination. Pieces from this era transitioned from earlier chest designs to raised, multi-drawer storage cabinets.

Chests from this period were constructed using solid English oak with mortise and tenon joints, hand-sawn drawer linings, and side-hung drawer runners rather than bottom runners. Drawer fronts were decorated with applied geometric mouldings and secured with teardrop or drop handles held by split pins.

Authentic pieces display hand-hewn timber marks, irregular thickness in back panels, side-runner drawer channels, and signs of natural shrinkage around wood pegs. Original keyholes often feature simple brass escutcheons, and the interior wood shows uneven age oxidation.

A 17th-century oak chest acts as a grounding anchor when contrasted against minimalist walls, neutral stone flooring, or contemporary artwork. Positioning the piece in an entryway or bedroom adds historical texture without overwhelming modern architectural lines.

Maintain oak surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement or splitting.
