Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 19th century, Dutch silversmiths produced a variety of detailed silver novelties specifically intended for needlework and embroidery. Sewing tools, such as tape measures, thimble holders, and etuis, were crafted as functional status symbols and kept inside sewing boxes or attached to chatelaines.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid silver or Dutch hallmarked silver casings housing a coiled silk or woven fabric ribbon. Winding mechanisms featured internal iron or silver spindles connected to external folding hand cranks.

Authentic pieces feature official Dutch hallmark stamps, such as the sword hallmark or provincial maker marks. Construction hallmarks include hand-engraved scrollwork, pierced geometric fretwork, original silk ribbon wear, and period-appropriate folding crank designs.

Small antique silver novelties can be displayed inside glass-topped collector trays, cabinet vitrines, or shadow boxes placed on bookshelves or desks to highlight their fine craftsmanship alongside other small curios.

Clean the silver exterior gently with a dry, soft cotton or microfibre polishing cloth, avoiding chemical dips that can damage original fabric. Keep the item in a moisture-controlled environment out of direct sunlight to prevent silk degradation, and refrain from over-extending or tightly rewinding the delicate original ribbon.
