Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A ham bone holder, historically known in France as a manche a gigot, is a dining utensil designed to clamp onto the bone of a ham or leg of mutton to allow steady carving at the dining table. Popular during the nineteenth century, these devices served both a functional purpose and a decorative role in formal table service.

These utensils were typically constructed from sterling silver, silver plate, or nickel silver, often featuring steel or brass internal clamping mechanisms. Handles frequently showcased elaborate chasing, engraving, or turned bone, ivory, or mother-of-pearl accents.

Authentic examples feature hallmarking or makers marks on the silver sleeve or handle, indicating silver purity and manufacturer. Additionally, hand-chased foliage motifs, threaded key screws, and minor age-related wear around the clamp mechanism distinguish historical pieces from modern reproductions.

An antique ham holder can be displayed on a dining sideboard alongside silver hollowware, mounted in a glass cloche as a conversation piece, or used during formal holiday dining service to maintain traditional carving presentation.

Silver elements should be polished gently with a specialist silver cloth or non-abrasive cream, avoiding prolonged immersion of mechanical joints in water. Dry the clamping mechanism thoroughly to prevent internal oxidisation and store in an anti-tarnish cloth pouch.
