A Rare Pair of Spode Stone China Octagonal Cabinet Plates England, Circa 1820

19th century
Description

A rare pair of Spode Stone China octagonal cabinet plates, finely painted in brightly coloured enamels with an elaborate Chinese Chinoiserie landscape. The central reserves depict a series of animated narrative scenes incorporating elegant figures within an idealised setting, including a gentleman preparing to fly a hawk accompanied by children, a lady and child beside a temple or pavilion, figures amongst rocky, tree-lined landscapes, a lady observing from a window, and domestic fowl in the foreground. The compositions display an exceptional level of detail and are enriched throughout with finely applied gilding.

The reserves are enclosed within a richly ornamented border of flowering plants and foliage, delicately highlighted in gilt and framed by black and gilt line rims, providing an effective contrast to the vibrant palette of the central decoration.

The quality of the painting and the complexity of the design suggest a bespoke commission rather than a standard factory pattern. No comparable examples have been identified, indicating that this service may have been produced in very limited numbers, possibly as a private order.

The plates remain in excellent original condition, with no evidence of restoration, repair, chips or cracks, and retain their crisp enamels and gilding to an unusually high degree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the early nineteenth century, Spode Stone China was a durable, vitrified ironstone ware developed to emulate costly imported Chinese porcelain, often decorated with vibrant Chinoiserie patterns.

Stone china is crafted from a dense mixture of china clay, ground flint, and feldspar, decorated with transfer-printed patterns, hand-applied polychrome enamels, and gilded rim details.

Authentic pieces generally feature printed or impressed maker marks on the underside, a heavy ceramic body with a faint bluish undertone, and overglaze enamel decoration over printed outlines.

Display these decorative octagonal plates upright on stands atop a sideboard or bookcase, or arrange them symmetrically on a wall as decorative wall art.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive pads or dishwashers to protect delicate gilding and overglaze enamels.
