Antique Mahogany Chippendale Style Pedestal Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

A very impressive and extremely well made antique mahogany Chippendale style pedestal desk. This is in the famous Chippendale style, it was made in England and dates from the 1900-20’s.

It is of superb quality and is a great size, with a wide knee hole. The inset leather top is gold tooled and has a beautiful patina, the top, middle and lower edges are beautifully carved with intricate beading. The front edges are canted and grooved, high quality brass handles and this sits on claw and ball legs. The back is nicely finished and the top lifts right off, so this can break down into three pieces for ease of transport. The mahogany grain patterns and colour tones are stunning throughout.

We have had this recently polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age and all part of the character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from 18th-century designs popularized by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, this desk style features robust mahogany construction, ornate edge mouldings, brass hardware, and carved ball-and-claw feet supporting two drawer pedestals.

Traditional pedestal desks are constructed from solid and veneered hardwoods such as flame mahogany or walnut, featuring gold-tooled leather writing surfaces and solid cast brass handles.

Authentic period and high-grade revival desks exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, original cast brass swan-neck handles, hand-carved ball-and-claw feet, and book-matched flame mahogany drawer fronts.

Position the desk centrally in a home office or library, balancing dark polished mahogany against neutral walls, a contemporary task light, and sleek modern seating.

Maintain the mahogany timber by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax along the grain periodically, while treating the inset leather top with dedicated leather conditioner to prevent drying.
