Art Deco opalescent glass is defined by its distinct milky translucent finish that shifts in hue when viewed against different light sources. Pioneered by French glassmakers, these pieces frequently featured relief-moulded naturalistic, geometric, or figurative motifs that highlighted the optical properties of the glass chemistry.

Pieces were produced using press-moulded techniques with glass formulations containing compounds such as bone ash or fluorides. Differential cooling rates during the manufacturing process caused phase separation, generating microscopic crystals that scatter light to produce the signature opalescent shimmer.

Authentic pre-war pieces typically feature wheel-engraved, moulded, or stencilled signatures such as R. LALIQUE FRANCE. Marks were usually applied neatly to the base or near the outer edge, with variations depending on the production technique and date of manufacture.
