Ningxia Rug

19th century
Description

Ningxia rugs are often quite reserved in their design and are a far cry from the elaborate drawing of other and later chinese pieces. This has really good age and I think a wonderful archaic look to match. Much of the central light field has worn away but it is possible to pick out a lattice design. The soft blue in the spandrels has a subtle beauty with the deep blue of the border framing the calm space within. I am no expert on Chinese rugs but when I venture outside of my comfort zone I search for anything that has a look and this rug certainly meets that criteria.

Very low pile to the central field with foundation showing. The ends are a little untidy and have lost some rows of knots as is to be expected on a piece of this age. There is a small hole repair visible in the photographs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ningxia rugs originate from the Ningxia province in northwestern China, a historical centre for carpet weaving along the Silk Road. Produced predominantly during the Qing Dynasty, these rugs were influenced by Imperial court aesthetics and feature distinctive open fields, soft wool, and serene blue-and-beige colour palettes.

Traditional Ningxia rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool on a cotton or wool foundation. The wool pile is dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes, with cobalt blue from indigo being a characteristic shade, resulting in soft textures and subtle chromatic variations.

Authentic Ningxia carpets typically feature asymmetrical knot construction, a relatively low knot density, and a soft, supple handle. Visually, they are recognisable by sparse central medallions, corner spandrels, geometric fretwork borders, and muted natural dye tones.

A Ningxia rug serves as a soft, neutral anchor in minimalist, contemporary, or traditional spaces. Position the rug in a hallway, bedroom, or living area where the blue motifs can echo blue accents in upholstery, ceramics, or artwork.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the hand-knotted fibres. Rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, and seek professional hand-cleaning services for spot removal or deep restoration.
