Imari porcelain refers to Japanese ceramic export ware produced in the Arita region and shipped via the port of Imari, historically characterised by vibrant underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamel decoration.

Imari wares are crafted from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay, painted with underglaze cobalt pigment, glazed, and then fired before receiving additional overglaze enamel colours and gilded detailing in subsequent lower-temperature firings.
