Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Hand-woven soumak weft wrapping: nomadic weaving technique typical of the early 20th century.
Gentle colour variation in the yarns: small-batch natural dyeing.
Intact cowrie shells and wool tassels: complete original nomadic adornment.
Hand-stitched side seams: traditional construction of an folded tribal bag.

This antique vanity bag originates from the Kuhi Afshars of the Jebal Barez mountains in the Kerman Province of southern Persia, dating to 1910 in the Persian tribal style. Woven in a relatively coarse soumak technique from wool, it comprises a carmine-red, orange-red and sky-blue palette with white cotton and goat-hair highlights. The surface displays a latticed central panel, framed by geometric borders and finished with a heavy fringed base. The fringe consists of braided horse-hair tassels and white cowrie shells. Measuring 36 cm high and 27 cm wide, this textile is designed to hang vertically on a narrow wall space in a home today.

A tribal vanity bag, historically crafted by nomadic weavers in Persia and Central Asia, is a small handwoven pouch used for storing personal accessories, cosmetics, or mirrors during transit.

These textiles are hand-spun from natural sheep wool coloured with plant dyes, constructed using flatweave or soumak techniques, and often adorned with cowrie shells, glass beads, and braided tassels.

Authentic Afshar weavings feature bold geometric motifs, natural dye variations known as abrash, hand-spun wool warp and weft, and traditional fringe finishes.

Small tribal textiles can be mounted inside shadow box frames, displayed flat on console tables, or hung directly on walls to introduce pattern and tactile warmth to a modern space.

Store antique wool textiles in climate-controlled environments away from direct sunlight, vacuum gently without a rotating brush, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning.
