Description

This charming small chanteh or vanity-bag comprises an unusual natural-dye pale mustard-yellow ground with stylised bird sitting atop what reminds me of a Turkmen 'gul'. On either side are flower-heads and two 'botehs'.

The back is woven in fine, narrow, coloured, horizontal bands in plain-weave, quite typical of Lori-Bakhtiari work.

Made circa 1900, the bag is in very good condition.

A Persian tribal vanity bag, or bagface, is a small, intricately woven textile piece traditionally crafted by nomadic women in regions such as western Persia for personal use or dowry displays, often featuring distinctive geometric and zoomorphic motifs.

These pieces are typically hand-knotted in pile technique or flatwoven using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the foundation and the pile, dyed with natural plant and mineral colourants.

Authenticity is identified through the presence of hand-spun wool with natural irregularities, vegetable-dyed colours that show subtle abrash (tonal variations), authentic tribal iconography, and traditional warp andweft structures consistent with specific nomadic groups.

Such pieces can be mounted on linen backgrounds and framed as textile art, displayed on small stands, or incorporated into eclectic wall displays to add rich texture and historical depth to a contemporary room.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, gently vacuuming with mesh protection on low suction, and avoiding excess moisture to protect the natural wool fibers.
