M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
Raised on cast rock-work bases the well-modelled standing cranes shown with coronets around their necks holding branches in their beaks supporting cast foliate rococo-inspired candle-holder sconces and drip-pans . The underside of the bases with cast-iron balancing weights stamped “ABBOTT “.

In excellent original condition with a consistent surface and patina . Have minor drill holes where previously been adapted as electric lamp bases .
The brass founding firm of Thomas Abbott had registered premises in Moor St.
. A pair of these being held in the collections of the V & A Museum, London, where they are described as being produced in mercury gilded copper alloy .
