Victorian Oak & Burr Walnut Pedestal Desk

19th century
Description

A fine quality late Victorian oak and burr walnut pedestal desk, dating from circa 1880, of impressive proportions and exceptional decorative appeal.

The rectangular top has an inset burgundy hide writing surface, beautifully finished with gilt and blind-tooled borders. Beneath are three frieze drawers above twin pedestals, each fitted with three graduated drawers, providing ample storage. The drawer fronts are veneered in wonderfully figured burr walnut, displaying striking symmetrical grain patterns, and are complemented by turned walnut knob handles and working lock and keys for the central drawer.

The desk is finished to all sides, with panelled oak construction allowing it to stand freely within a room if desired. The quality of the timber selection and craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the richly figured veneers to the solid oak drawer linings with traditional dovetail construction.

Presented in very good antique condition with a rich warm colour and pleasing patina developed over more than a century of use. A handsome and practical Victorian desk, equally suited to a study, library, office or country house interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk is a free-standing writing table composed of a wide top surface resting on two twin columns of drawers, creating a central kneehole space. Popularised during the 19th century in Britain, these desks served as functional working surfaces in commercial offices and private studies.

Victorian pedestal desks are commonly constructed from oak or mahogany secondary timbers, finished with decorative burr walnut or mahogany veneers on exterior surfaces. Quality construction includes hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, turned wood or brass knob handles, and individual brass lever locks.

Authentic pieces feature three-part modular construction comprising two separate pedestal bases and a removable top section to facilitate transport. Key indicators include hand-planed drawer linings, authentic timber oxidisation, turned timber handles, and period keyhole escutcheons.

Integrate a Victorian pedestal desk into a modern study or living space by pairing it with neutral wall palettes, contemporary task lamps, and sleek leather seating. Position the piece away from walls to allow full appreciation of its finished timber back and profile.

Maintain the desk by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice per year. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources, radiators, and bright sunlight to prevent veneer drying, cracking, or colour bleaching.
