This Victorian propelling pencil originates from 1850 and is formed from sterling silver with a bright metallic silver finish. The cylindrical body includes two parallel longitudinal side slots fitted with dark slide buttons, a prominent raised circular moulding encircling the top section beneath the dual lead tips, and a small loop-shaped suspension ring affixed to the base. The dual lead tips emerge from the top end, holding contrasting black and red leads respectively. Measuring approximately 8 cm in length, this item is designed as a portable writing instrument historically intended for a gentleman's library. In a contemporary home, it functions as a decorative desk accessory or a cabinet display piece on an office desk, and can also be worn as a pendant charm on a suitable neck chain or pocket watch chain.

Sampson Mordan patented the first mechanical pencil mechanism in 1822 alongside John Isaac Hawkins. The company continued producing innovative silver and gold writing instruments throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These pieces were constructed primarily from sterling silver or gold plate, featuring internal brass slider mechanisms and small gemstone or coloured enamel cabochons on the exterior buttons to indicate lead colour.

Authentic items are marked with makers stamps such as S. Mordan & Co or S.M.Co, accompanied by official British silver hallmarks detailing the purity, assay office, and date letter.

Place the item on an office desk atop a leather blotter tray, display it within a glass stationery case, or mount it inside a framed shadow box alongside historical documents.

Clean the silver exterior gently using a dry microfibre polishing cloth without submerging the piece, ensuring liquid polish does not enter the internal slider mechanisms.
