This large circular decorative tray dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, created in the Mamluk Revival style. Made from brass with a warm brass colour, the piece presents an intricate surface of hand-engraved Islamic calligraphy, geometric interlace patterns, and a central star motif inside a hexagonal field, bordered by a raised rim. Visible details include finely chased calligraphic lozenges throughout the design zones and a continuous circular engraved band around the outer perimeter. The object measures 69.5 cm high, 69.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, the tray functions effectively as a wall hanging in a gentleman's library or above a sideboard. Alternatively, removing the fitted wall hanging ring to the rear allows it to serve as a table top.

Cairoware refers to brass and copper decorative objects produced primarily in Cairo during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often created in the Mamluk Revival style. These pieces drew inspiration from 14th-century Islamic metalworking traditions, incorporating complex geometric interlace and Arabic calligraphic inscriptions.

These trays were crafted from sheet brass, shaped with a raised outer lip, and decorated entirely by hand. Craftsmen used small chisels and hammers to chase and engrave intricate geometric arabesques, star polygons, and calligraphic bands directly into the metal surface.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooling rather than machine stamping, resulting in subtle variations in depth and spacing within the engraved work. Look for natural patination, subtle surface wear consistent with age, and precise hand-chased calligraphic detailing.

A large engraved tray can be wall-mounted using a heavy-duty wire plate hanger to function as architectural metal art. Alternatively, it can be displayed atop a large sideboard, coffee table, or placed on a custom wooden stand to serve as a low table surface.

Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth is recommended to prevent dirt accumulation within the detailed engraving. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads that can strip away original patination; a gentle conservation wax can be applied periodically to protect against tarnish.
