Antique Timuri Bread Sofreh, Sangtshuli Tribe, Chakhansur Region, South-west Afghanistan.

19th century
Description

Private Collection just acquired.

This tiny bread sofreh, used for kneading dough, is extremely rare.

Made by Timuri - Sangtshuli tribes in south-west Afghanistan during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the central field is incredibly finely woven in a technique referred to as overlay/underlay brocading. The narrow, horizontal panel in the centre is even finer, woven in weft-substitution technique. The borders around the field are in knotted-pile and both skirts are finely worked again in weft-substitution weave.

Charming in every way and in excellent condition, this is a very collectible weaving of which few have survived.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sofreh is a traditional handwoven tribal textile historically crafted by nomadic tribes in Central and South-West Asia, specifically designed as a functional cloth for resting, kneading, or serving flatbread.

These textiles are hand-spun from natural wool fibres and coloured using plant-based dyes, often combining flatweave, kilim, brocading, or pile techniques to create durable geometric structures.

Authentic Timuri weavings typically display a dark color palette dominated by burgundy, dark blue, and dark brown, featuring repeating stylized motifs, wool warps, and geometric woven end skirts.

These versatile textiles can be mounted on a wall as decorative art, laid as accent rugs, or draped across long surfaces such as sideboards or dining tables.

Care involves periodic suction-only vacuuming without a rotating brush, protection from direct moisture and harsh sunlight, and professional cleaning by a textile specialist when required.
