Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Niello is a black metallic alloy of sulphur, silver, copper, and lead used as an inlay on engraved metal. Its use flourished in Russia during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in centres such as Veliky Ustyug and Moscow, where craftsmen produced intricate topographical, geometric, and floral designs.

These boxes are traditionally fashioned from sterling or 84-zolotnik silver, then hand-engraved with deep linear motifs. The recesses are filled with the powdered niello amalgam and fired until the alloy fuses permanently with the metal base, creating a high-contrast black and silver design.

Authentic pieces typically feature Cyrillic makers marks, assay master initials, and the zolotnik silver standard hallmark (such as 84, corresponding to 875 silver purity). Genuine niello exhibits a smooth, integrated finish where the black inlay is flush with the aged silver surface.

Such small-scale metalware pieces work effectively as desk accessories, mantelpiece objects, or tabletop curiosities in a curated study or drawing room. They add historical depth and tactile metallic interest when displayed on a stack of art books or within a glass-fronted cabinet.

Antique silver with niello inlay should be cleaned very carefully with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Standard liquid silver dips and aggressive polishing pastes must be avoided, as harsh chemicals will permanently strip the dark niello inlay from the engraved recesses.
