Rare Antique Qashqa’i Baby Cradle, Kashkuli Tayefeh, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

This extremely rare, museum-quality, baby cradle, which I acquired from Iran late last year, is a record of a very special weaving which is lost today.

I managed to acquire the cradle complete with wooden hanging rods at each end, and expecting the wooden rods to be impounded by UK customs, was delighted to receive the cradle intact with rods.

The cradle, which was woven by Qashqa’i Kashkuli nomads during the early 20th century, had been lovingly woven by a tribal mother or grandmother for the impending arrival of the much-wanted baby or grandchild.

The cradle is woven in madder-red plain-weave technique with an abundance of knotted-pile deer or gazelle, stylised flower-heads and one, solitary, tiny, baby deer or gazelle.

I have never come across such an amazing, complete cradle in over 40 years of dealing in antique tribal rugs and weavings and that includes anything in my extensive collection of books showing weavings from private collections worldwide! Maybe there is another one out there somewhere!

Maybe one day too, a museum dedicated to the rugs and weavings of the Persian nomads will be established and where a weaving like this cradle will be on view, to show people how babies in nomadic life spent the first few years of their lives sleeping in cradles like this.

I thought of keeping it but have sadly nowhere to hang it. I hope it can go to a good home. The baby is excluded by the way!

I have priced it fairly according to condition and rarity and all I can say is, find another!

Size: 1.15 x 0.79m (3' 9" x 2' 7").

This rare antique Qashqa'i baby cradle originates from the Kashkuli Tayefeh in the Fars province of south-west Persia, dating from the early 20th century. Woven by nomadic hands in a terracotta red madder wool plain-weave technique, the textile features knotted-pile deer or gazelle motifs, stylised flower-heads, and numerous woollen tassels suspended from braided cords. The structure incorporates leather loops along the top and bottom edge that secure the piece to turned wooden support rods with rounded finials. The vertical rectangular textile measures 115 cm high and 79 cm wide. Suitable for interior display in contemporary homes, the hanging textile functions well as a decorative wall hanging mounted above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or study. The construction integrates soft wool fibres with durable leather and natural timber elements, presenting an authentic example of Persian tribal weaving traditions. The piece adapts easily to eclectic or bohemian interiors where tactile folk art textiles provide textured warmth and historical interest.

Handwoven by nomadic Qashqai tribes of Fars province in South-West Persia, these woven panels formed the soft body or decorative face of portable infant hammocks known as naneh or gahvareh.

They were constructed using hand-spun wool yarn dyed with natural vegetable dyes, leather support straps, and wooden or bone stretchers, often decorated with woollen tassels and glass beads.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool warp and weft threads, asymmetrical knotting, geometric motifs specific to clans like the Kashkuli, and natural colour variations known as abrash.

Display the textile as a wall hanging above a sideboard or sofa, pairing its intricate surface texture and dark tones against neutral walls and minimalist furnishings.

Keep the weaving away from direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation, dust gently using a low-suction vacuum through a protective screen mesh, and consult a professional conservator for washing.
