Karabagh Rug

£400    $540    €467
Rugs produced in the Karabagh region are varied and distinctive, sometimes they have garish palettes and bold designs, others are Kazak like in their colouring and motifs. This type belongs to the group with strong western influences. Almost certainly made with that market in mind they sometimes have Aubusson designs whilst others can be rows of kitsch roses picked out in bright reds and pinks. This one has the design drawn sideways which must have been a complex process, it shows griffins at each end with another two facing each other in the central panel. The colours are subdued which is probably good in such a bold design, the rug certainly has a very european feel to it. I think the narrow border gives space for the design to breathe. A highly unusual but very decorative rug.

Fair condition, the pile is low but acceptable. The rug bows outward at the bottom end due to its woollen foundation.
