Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A claret jug is a glass or crystal pitcher fitted with a metallic collar, handle, and lid, designed specifically to decant and serve red wines, particularly Bordeaux. Originating in the Victorian era, these vessels allowed sediment to settle while displaying fine metalwork and glass cutting on formal dining tables.

These vessels generally combine hand-cut or etched lead crystal glass with mounts made from sterling silver, silver-gilt, or electroplated nickel silver. The metallic elements often feature chased or cast motifs, such as bacchanalian masks, foliage, and scrollwork.

Authentic pieces carry distinct makers marks for Asprey & Co Ltd along with official British hallmarks indicating the silver purity, assay office location, and date letter. Additionally, high-grade crystal etching and precision hand-chased detail on the metal collar distinguish authentic items from later reproductions.

Display the jug as a central accent on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or dining table alongside contemporary glassware to create a textural contrast. Its metallic highlights and detailed glass etching allow it to function as a refined decorative focal point even when not in service.

Rinse the glass interior with lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding extreme temperature changes that could shock the glass. Clean the silver collar using a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish, taking care to prevent liquid polish from seeping into the glass joins.
