Antique Tekke Turkmen Chuval Face with Six Turreted 'Salor' Guls, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 5in x 2ft 7in (135 x 79cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face with six 'Salor' turreted guls.

Circa 1900.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs.

The chuval face is drawn with six 'Salor' guls and Tekke chuval guls as secondary guls. The extensive use of cochineal dye gives the superb rich ground colour. The elem panel at the base is of a Turkmen shrub design. At some time in its history the plain weave back has been removed, making this very suitable for use as a small rug.

Good condition with slight even wear and good pile, there is a small old repair in the top right hand corner, this is reflected in the price.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval face is the decorated front panel of a large nomadic storage bag traditionally hand-woven by Turkmen tribes in Central Asia for yurt organization and transport.

Tekke chuvals were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on wool warps and wefts, utilising natural vegetable dyes to create deep crimson, navy, and terracotta hues.

Authentic antique examples exhibit fine asymmetric wool knotting, subtle dye abrash variations, specific geometric tribal guls, and soft, naturally aged wool pile.

These historical textiles are frequently mounted as wall art or draped across low benches to introduce rich colour, history, and textural pattern to modern spaces.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently without a rotating brush attachment, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning.
