Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons or chenets, are decorative metal supports used in pairs to hold logs off the floor of a fireplace, improving airflow and draft. Originating in antiquity, ornate brass and bronze chenets became prominent decorative statements in French interiors during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Traditional fire dogs were crafted using sand-casting or lost-wax casting methods in materials such as wrought iron, brass, bronze, or ormolu. High-end French examples feature hand-chased ornamentation, pierced openwork, and gilt or lacquered surface treatments attached to cast iron hearth bars.

Authentic period pieces often show subtle hand-tooling marks, threaded assembly rods with square nuts, and signs of genuine thermal oxidisation or soot residue on the rear irons. Significant physical weight is another key indicator, as genuine cast bronze and brass pieces possess considerable heft.

These decorative metal objects can be positioned inside an unused fireplace hearth alongside birch logs or LED pillar candles to form an architectural focal point. Alternatively, they function as sculptural accents displayed on a stone hearth floor.

Maintain cast brass or gilt bronze fire dogs by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip natural patina. Unlacquered brass can be polished gently with dedicated metal cleaner, whereas lacquered surfaces should only be cleaned using a slightly damp cloth.
