Antique Walnut Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A fantastic antique walnut chest of drawers, dating from around the 1830-40 period.

It is of outstanding quality and has a beautiful design. It is a great size, with plenty of storage space inside the generous drawers. The drawers have fine hand cut dovetailed joints and wonderful turned handles. The drawers fronts have lovely moulding around the edges, the front corners of the chests have beautifully made corbels at the top, middle and lower edges.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. The walnut has acquired a gorgeous colour tone and natural patina over the years, with some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian walnut chest of drawers dates from the 1850 period and exhibits a warm brown colour with a polished timber finish. The piece measures 99 cm high, 104 cm wide and 48 cm deep, providing generous storage space within a two over three drawer configuration. The visible details comprise turned wooden knobs on each drawer, raised oval mouldings surrounding the drawer fronts, and decorative side pilasters along the vertical corners. Minor wear remains beneath the polish from age, and the construction incorporates hand cut dovetailed joints. Position this chest of drawers in a bedroom, dressing room or hallway to store linens, clothing or accessories. The English Country House style suits traditional interiors, while the practical proportions allow the top surface to hold decorative items, lamps or everyday essentials. The natural patina and warm timber tones integrate easily into various domestic settings as a functional storage solution.

FAQs

Victorian walnut chests of drawers typically feature rich timber grain, robust frame construction, and solid drawers arranged in two short over three long configurations. They often display moulded framing on drawer fronts, turned wooden knobs, and decorative side pilasters.

Chests from this period were predominantly crafted using solid walnut or walnut veneers over pine or oak carcasses. Drawer linings were frequently made from solid oak or pine, joined with hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawer boxes, uneven timber wear consistent with age, original brass or wooden locks, and natural oxidisation on the interior drawer bottoms and rear casing.

Position the walnut chest against a neutral or dark backdrop to accentuate the warm wood tones. Balance the traditional aesthetic by placing contemporary lighting, contemporary artwork, or modern ceramics on the top surface.

Maintain the wood by applying a quality beeswax polish every few months and buffing along the direction of the grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer cracking.
