This French Louis XV style bombe chest of drawers dates to 1890 and is fashioned from walnut, kingwood, ormolu, and marble in warm brown tones. The serpentine structure displays floral marquetry inlays across the drawer fronts and side panels, complemented by crossbanding. Ornate gilt bronze ormolu mounts adorn the corners, while cast ormolu handles with scrolling forms and central escutcheons accent the two exterior drawers. The commode stands on cabriole legs terminating in ormolu sabots, with a decorative gilt bronze apron ornament positioned beneath the lower drawer and a red marble top crowning the piece. The physical dimensions measure 83 cm high, 73 cm wide, and 36.5 cm deep. In a modern home interior, this compact commode suits placement in a hallway, bedroom, or drawing room as a decorative side table or storage unit. The surface accommodates lamps, small ornaments, or floral arrangements, whilst the interior drawers provide practical concealed storage for personal items, accessories, or stationery. The traditional French chateau aesthetic integrates well into both period properties and eclectic contemporary room schemes requiring an accent piece with classical European styling.

A bombe commode is a form of chest of drawers that emerged in 18th-century France, characterised by its convex or outward-curving front and sides. The style is strongly associated with the Rococo and Louis XV design periods, emphasizing fluid lines and decorative surface embellishments.

These commodes were typically built with oak or pine carcasses veneered with fine hardwoods such as kingwood, tulipwood, or walnut. Exterior features often include floral marquetry inlays, cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, and a fitted marble slab on top.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery, hand-chased brass or bronze mounts, and irregular saw marks on wood backings. The marble tops often show hand-chiselled edging on the underside and natural wear consistent with age.

A French bombe commode functions as an accent piece in hallways, living areas, or bedrooms. Pairing its curved profile against clean architectural lines or minimal wall finishes highlights its decorative silhouette.

Clean the marble top using a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner to protect against acidic spills. The wood marquetry requires dusting with a microfibre cloth and occasional application of natural beeswax to maintain veneer hydration.
