FAQs

French Rococo style bedroom furniture from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is characterised by asymmetric curves, naturalistic ornamentation such as acanthus leaves and shell motifs, and flowing serpentine outlines. When executed in oak, these designs combine elaborate carved detailing with the sturdy visual weight of European hardwood.

Traditional oak bed frames utilize mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs or cast iron side-rail bolts. The decorative elements, including raised field panels and shell crestings, are carved directly into solid timber blocks prior to assembly.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved details with minor variations in symmetry, hand-cut joinery, and natural age-related oxidisation in the recessed areas of the carving. The wood grain on the panels typically shows character unique to quartersawn or rift-sawn oak.

A carved oak bed frame can be styled by pairing the natural timber tone with crisp white or muted linen bedding to contrast with the rich wood grain. Surrounding the frame with understated contemporary lighting and minimalist nightstands prevents the decorative carving from overwhelming the room.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft brush or microfibre cloth to prevent buildup in carved recesses. Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
