This French Louis XV style corbeille double bed dates from 1890 and is constructed from warm brown walnut with new green peacock feather patterned textile upholstery outlined in brass studs. The curved headboard and matching corbeille footboard have shaped wooden borders accented with decorative carving at the crests, supported by short cabriole legs and tall upright wooden posts flanking the head. The bed measures 119 cm high, 147 cm wide, and 211 cm long, taking a standard double mattress that rests on a divan base or wooden slats. It provides a striking focal point for a main bedroom or guest room in a home today, pairing traditional French chateau character with vibrant modern textile design.

A Corbeille bed originates from France and is distinguished by its curved, basket-shaped footboard that wraps around the corners of the mattress. Typically associated with the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, these frames feature hand-carved wooden borders and upholstered panels.

Traditional French beds feature solid timber frames made from fruitwood, oak, beech, or walnut. Upholstered sections were originally padded with natural materials such as horsehair or wool and secured with brass upholstery tacks.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical hand-carved floral crests, cabriole legs, cast iron or heavy timber side-rail brackets, and a distinctly curved footboard designed to cradle the base of the bed.

Pair the curved silhouette with neutral bed linen to highlight the carved timber frame, or coordinate wall colours with accents in the upholstery fabric to create a cohesive interior design scheme.

Clean timber components using a soft microfiber cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to protect the finish. Vacuum fabric panels gently using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust accumulation.
