Very Large French Painted Double Bed C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

Unusually large French painted double bed c.1920. Very nearly six and a half feet wide. Designed to accommodate an 66" x 80" mattress. Shaped and moulded head and foot boards, the head topped with a carved and pierced spray of acanthus leaves and flowers. Both raised on scrolling acanthus feet. Side rails also shaped and moulded. Painted a pale putty grey, worn and rubbed through in places to reveal the walnut frame. With two simple wooden cross stretchers. Good condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

This unusual French painted double bed dates from around 1920 and follows a French Provincial style. Fashioned from hardwood with a pale putty grey painted finish, the piece shows wear and rubbing through the paint that reveals the walnut timber beneath, alongside a clear wax application. The shaped and moulded headboard and footboard feature serpentine rails and cabriole legs ending in scrolling acanthus feet, while the top of the headboard displays a carved and pierced spray of acanthus leaves and flowers, complemented by two simple wooden cross stretchers.
