19th Century Unusual Designed Cased Set of French Solid Silver Handled Servers with Interesting Provenance.

19th century
Description

19th century cased set of four French servers with beautiful and unusual solid silver handles, and very interesting provenance.

This set consists of two forks, a butter, cheese or pate knife, and a spreader. The handles are marked .800 fine solid silver and have an unusually lovely design of a leafy flowered vine trailing up a basket weave trellis. The design is the same on both sides of the handle, and they are in very good condition. The steel or silver plate portions are a bit marked as shown, but still very usable.

Size-forks 8 3/8 inches long by .75 inches wide, knife 8 inches long by 1 inch wide, spreader 7.75 inches long by 7/8 inches wide. Case overall is 9.5 inches long by 5 inches wide by 1.25 inches high.

Weight-175 grams servers, 370 grams with case.

These were from the estate of Sylvaine le Desert. She was the daughter of famous Parisian journalist Jacques le Desert and the granddaughter of the newspaper proprietor and minister, Alexandre Israel. These came from the Paris property of her grandfather, now named Place de Alexandre Israel.

Sylvanie survived occupied France by posing as a village girl. She worked the land, and became a member of the French resistance. She lived in Surrey, England for many years, until her death in 2009.

An unusual and very functional serving set with great style and design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
